I am interning for a
company called PSI. PSI stands for Professional Service Industries, Inc and is
a geotechnical engineering, construction material testing, environmental consulting
and facilities engineering firm. PSI is nation wide with over 125 locations. I
currently work at the Tempe location as a field technician. I am responsible
for testing and compliance of construction materials used. My responsibilities include
inspecting and testing soil compaction, footings, rebar, concrete, and asphalt.
I am responsible to make sure material and methods used adhere to city/regional
codes and the engineers recommendations. I have to read site plans and job
reports to find out these recommendations. My first few days with PSI were
spent on the computer completing safety and orientation videos. I had to
complete numerous quizzes after each video. The videos were full of useful
information that I did not take for granite. A construction job site can be a
very dangerous place if not fully trained.
Hi Mike, you seem to have a lot of practical experiences that are helping you with this job. And urban planning is such a challenge. My brother works for an environmental consulting firm and he just finished writing technical manuals for the retrofitting of HUD housing for energy and green purposes. He hates writing but learned a lot about construction. Hope you continue to enjoy your internship.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike,
ReplyDeleteBeing that I too work within the construction industry out of curiosity does your company primarily do work for the public sector, private sector, or a fair mix of both? What is the typical nature of the projects you work on and job sites you visit? Thats got to be a stressful job at times, testing the safety of building and the like, but it sounds like that for the most part you enjoy what you do. Hope your internship is still going smoothly!
Thanks,
Matt
